Amidst the hustle and bustle of Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the start of the holidays, it’s easy to forget the reason for the season: giving.
For many the holidays are a time of extras: extra gifts, extra treats, and other indulgences. But there are many in our communities who don’t have even the basics.
Both in Canada and the United States we have a day for giving thanks. We then have two days for getting deals. And if you’re like me you got some pretty sweet deals. Now, we have #GivingTuesdayCA (#GivingTuesday in the US), a global day dedicated to giving back. It serves as a reminder that while you’re thinking of family and friends around the holidays, to stop and think about the many in need in our community.
In my community, Ottawa, I am thinking of the 1 in 5 children who live in poverty and don’t have a safe place to go after school. Kids like Sosna.
For kids growing up in Canada, skating on an outdoor rink isn’t just an activity, it’s a rite of passage. With the costs of equipment, lessons and the demands on time, Sosna was indoors looking out, dreaming about taking part in Canada’s other official sport.
That was until she found the “I Love to Skate” program. It addresses financial barriers to physical activity opportunities and provides kids with ice skates and hockey helmets in addition to four weeks of recreational skating lessons at several of our City’s 244 outdoor rinks.
More than 9,100 children like Sosna live in vulnerable neighborhoods right here in our Nation’s Capital and benefit from after-school programs like “I Love to Skate”. The Ottawa Senators Foundation, in partnership with Canadian Tire Jumpstart and the City of Ottawa, are addressing this problem.
To ensure funds are available to invest in programs like “I Love to Skate”, I am once again skiing 24h Tremblant. I ski to ensure kids like Sonsa have a chance to reach their full potential.
Today, #GivingTuesdayCA, is the one day in the holiday season dedicated to focusing on others. Please consider putting your wish list aside and helping children in need. Kids like Sosna. No child deserves to be inside looking out this holiday season. Donate here.0
