Ottawa is a beautiful city. It is a rich, vibrant, diverse community. A thriving business and government town, it is home to a large number of foreign embassies and is a recognized centre for both academics and professional training. It is often referred to as a big town.
This is the Ottawa we know.
So why is it that 32,000 children are living in poverty in our rich city? Or that 6,700 people were homeless, including 700 families, last year? Or that 12% of families in Ottawa are living on less than $20,000 annually?
This is the “other” Ottawa. The hidden Ottawa. The Ottawa that people don’t often see or hear about.
If Ottawa is North America’s least expensive major city to live in according to Mercer*, why are families crammed into single room shelters waiting for an affordable place to live? If we are so “rich” and a “thriving business and government town” then why are 58% of skilled, new Immigrants working in that have nothing to do with their education? And of those, 40% are living in low income situations?
United Way Ottawa is trying to change these statistics. It is committed to making our city a stronger, healthier, safer place. It is dedicated to helping change the lives of some of Ottawa’s most vulnerable. However, lasting change will only happen if we work together and make the right choices.
We are all capable of doing great things, in many different ways. No single person, organization or institution on its own can create the change we seek to make.
United Way is an expression of the way our community comes together at a time when needed most – as donors, as businesses, as institutions, as volunteers, as people who care about others – to help make this city a great place to live for everyone.
As United Way prepares to launch its community campaign, we all have the chance to be a hero and change lives in Ottawa. You might not know the person you are helping, but your generosity will make a real impact. Each one of us has the ability to make a deep and lasting difference in the lives of other people.
Martin Luther King, Jr., said that: ‘Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.’ Together we can be that light, that beacon of hope to others. Be a hero. Make change happen.
